Sunshine is the latest creation of director Danny Boyle. Staring Cillian Murphy, it is a sci-fi thriller set 50 years into the future (though I do not recall this actually being said) during a solar winter. That is, our sun is fading and the earth is essentially frozen in a state of perpetual winter, everywhere. Of course a mission was established to remedy this problem and during the course of a second attempt at that mission is where we find ourselves.
I found it quite enjoyable. In some respects it is your standard sci-fi thriller but it has a unique premise that gives it a taste of something different. There are also a couple unexpected moral twists that you usually do not get from other Hollywood fare. Cillian Murphy is cool, of course, I was even plesantly surprised that Chris Evans was good considering that I found him extremely fucking irritating during his performance as Johnny Storm in The Fantastic Four.
The visuals are very beautiful. The Visual Effects team's visualizations of the sun at very close range were very well done, and I rather enjoyed how much the sun became another character in the film. At times it even seemed to emote, or maybe that was just my imagination taking over.
It is difficult to give a proper review without ruining anything so I will just leave you with the knowledge that I liked it and I would recommend you go see it if you are a fan of Danny Boyle or of sci-fi. You can rest easy knowing that I have good taste and your $8.50 (or whatever it costs in your area) will not be spent in vain.
